well we’re off. after leaving atlanta at around 11am, we landed at incheon just 15 hours later. i have eaten 4 meals since we left atlanta, so i feel a little like lillis : ). it wasn’t a bad flight, but there were a couple of noisy kids, so my sleep time was kept to about 4 hours. on a positive note, i did watch 21, cloverfield and most of bucket list. i don’t want to spoil it or anything, but i think they end up dying.
we stopped into the shower-atorium at the airport (which is very fancy by the way).
something about 15 hours on a plane really makes you glad to wash the gunk off. i feel like an almost new man.
we leave in a couple of hours for bangkok. i actually just found out as we were leaving atlanta that i will get to spend 1 night in bangkok (something i have wanted to do ever since the 4th grade – i’m excited to see the show with everything but Yul Brenner).
so we’re finishing up a meal of bul go gi (with kim chi mmmmm) and then we’ll head towards the gate. oh, one other BIG piece of news. i played some goofy airport game and won a USB fan and an inflatable cell phone coozie. so, someone special may be getting their very own USB fan when i get back : )
anyway, here’s an airport shot or two. we’ll check ya later.

lillis wanted us to do a celebratory tour of texas so that she could show me off to all the natives. i was dissapointed that not one of her family members was wearing either boots or a cowboy hat. i expected more. first stop was lubbock. here lillis is in the backyard of her parents house. i did mention she was excited to show me off, right? THIS is how excited she was!

lil and i went to visit her mother’s mother the first day there. here we all are in the backyard of her house. she has a baby grand piano which she assured us is lillis’ whenever lillis has a house big enough. um, it’s not gonna fit in the condo, but we’ll keep saving for a bigger place.
so, lubbock was every bit as flat as promised. i mean, this is about as flat as it gets.
it was, however, much cooler in temperature than i had anticipated. we had a pretty good time there, seeing both her grandmothers and the parents and her younger sister. after that we headed on down the state towards austin, stopping along the way to see an old accenture friend in san angelo.
our second night in austin we met up with lauren and berkley there. we had a great time, stopping for drinks at the hotel san jose, and then having dinner at south congress cafe. the food was AWESOME and it was actually a bit cheaper than it would have been in atlanta.
in austin we went to visit the capitol. lillis tells me it’s the tallest capitol in the US. not surprising : )

we went up to 360 bridge…
why? so lillis could do yoga poses (as featured in the photos from the trip at this link).
here, i took lillis swimming at barton springs in austin. it was EXTREMELY necessary b/c it was about a million degrees there. they put our drought to shame. our drought is still green. their’s is dry and brown. it’s one heck of a summer there right now. the springs were great, though. the water was 70 degrees and it was a great time.

we then headed on to dallas. dallas was actually hotter than austin. i thought my skin was gonna peel back. i’m not kidding. i also had no idea that it was so big. i did get to meet three of lillis’ very good friends and an old family friend of hers as well. it was a great trip (albeit a busy one) and it was good to get to meet more of her friends and family.

so, jason and i actually got frank back on the court for a volleyball tournament. it was the first time the three of us had played together since 2000. there was considerable rust to be shaken off. frank hadn’t used any of his excuses in almost 8 months because of an elbow surgery, but he fell into it in no time at all. frank did a great job at setter (he gets my mvp award), but neither jason or i were hitting the ball quite as well as we had been in bham. i think the blood doping may not have worked as intended – apparently it’s OXYGEN you’re supposed to put into your bloodstream….live and learn i guess. anyway, we got a tough butt whipping in our first match, but came back to play pretty well the rest of the day. we made it all the way to the finals (in Open – the highest division) but lost to a team that had one hitter (greg) who was pretty much tremendous all day long. all in all, not a bad showing. speaking of not a bad showing, later that evening, lillis totally pounded frank in a burger eating contest at the vortex. she consumed a 1/2 lb burger with 4 slices of cheese, 4 slices of bacon, a fried egg and extra mayo in just under 5 minutes. it was incredible. here’s the team photo after the tourney (and before the burgers). as you can see, my sunscreen was highly effective. : )
