the decemberists07.13.07

sooooo, sarah, zach, lillis and myself decided to catch the decemberists at chastain. they’re a good fun band, and if you’ve never heard them, check out their cd (the crane’s wife) and my personal favorite song of theirs “valencia”. the band was playing with the atlanta symphony orchestra. it was a neat paring.

here zach smiles for the camera (that sarah seems to be unaware of)

here, i try and lean back really far so it perspective doesn’t make it look like i have a giant head. i hope i was succsessful.

sarah and i spent lunch that day shopping at whole foods (whose ceo was recently found to have been going on chat rooms with a fake name and bad mouthing his competitors – wouldn’t you think a ceo would be too busy to do that??) for stuff for the show. we had a pretty freakin awesome spread of nuts, dried fruits, sliced salted meat and (my personal favorite) smoked mozzarella.

actually, though, the highlight purchase was a candle. not just any candle – a beeswax candle. and not just any beeswax candle, a 30 freakin dollar beeswax candle. i picked it up for the table never thinking a candle could be so expensive until after i had purchased it. i was too ashamed to return a candle i couldn’t afford so i kept it. it was a sweet candle though. it even came with instructions. sarah read them all . it had the power to ionize the air. also, i should not extinguish it by blowing on it, but should instead use a candle snuffer. “damn, where did i put the candle snuffer in this picnic basket?” honestly, i can never find my candle snuffer when i need it. sarah mocked my candle, but about midway through the concert a woman walked by (completely unsolicited) and said, “wow, nice candle!” i have never said those words before, i have never heard those words before. all i know is that statement was worth $freakin30.

so, the concert was great, the mood was chill and a good time was had by all. we took a team photo back at the car just to prove that the four of us were there together.

finally, here are 1, 2, 3 videos from the show. one prominently features my candle in all its regal splendor.

hoover lake house weekend06.23.07

got my first (finished) look at the hoovers’ new lake house up at lake nottely (spelling?). holy crap, that place is nice. i mean seriously nice. it’s got like twelve rooms and a giant deck overlooking the lake. the new dock is made out of magic jellybeans that don’t get hot and burn your feet even when it’s like 95 degrees and sunny. they also have added a pontoon boat to their repertoire, but we did not avail ourselves of that.

all of the pictures below are from the first day. why? an unfortunate incident that no one could have ever anticipated involving a large bottle of flor de cana and a cold bathroom floor.

anyway, here john shows text book style as he rips a big spray behind the boat.

here, i get a little bit of air coming off the wake.

lillis and john demonstrated excellent enthusiasm (and little good judgment) and tried to start off the day by getting two skiers onto 1 slalom ski. as you can see from the picture, as john wipes out, he drags lillis down by her life vest. cold john, cold.

this is just one of my more favorite wipeout shots. john was trying to do the skurf board behind the boat. i should relay that john actually ended up figuring it out on his very next try and successfully skurfed behind the boat with no rope. the lesson (as always) – john is bad ass behind a boat.

oh, and here’s a little kid that was cold chilin by the dock with his dog. he’s kickin quite a little steve zissou vibe.

here lillis is nose to nose with the dog (whose name eludes me) just moments after splitting the last noodle in their bowl of spaghetti.

rich has mad, hoover-type skills behind the boat as well. here he gets up on one foot while barefooting.

that led to this wipeout. notice the size of the explosion. pretty nice splash.

here, lillis shows off the form that made her a ski queen in lubbock texas.

night fell, but that didn’t stop the ripping.

john got in one last run under the cover of night.

thanks to john for hosting us (about 15 people in all probably) at the lake house. i had a blast, skiing, sunning, cooking, eating and talking. oh, and there was a dance competition and i enjoyed that as well. better luck next time suzanne. for full pics and some video from the weekend, see my web album at www.picasaweb.google.com/charlesbreland
