I found out the full name of this place is “San Juan de Furca.” Moving on. We had a great day yesterday. The ferry ride was beautiful and San Juan is a fabulous island. Perflectly small but just large enough. We spent the better part of our afternoon out on the water. We got super close to a whole pod of orcas including my favorite “Toby.” We also got to see cormorans and stellar sea lion as well as two bald eagles – one of which took off and flew right at us. We watched sunset at an old lighthouse and got some dinner before returning “home” to our b and b – a restored Victorian farmhouse from 1895 that sits on a bluff overlooking the sound. Today we traipse around the island and revisit the lavender farm (which has exquisite lavender ice cream) and do a little hiking before we hop the ferry over to orcas island to meet up with Lil’s cousin (ranger Jason). He’s the kind of ranger who protects democracy, not trees, so for once I won’t have to be “the muscle.” 🙂

We boarded the ferry in the lovely little town of Anacortes (which we got into around midnight western time last night). I got a couple of hours of sleep (after watching the surprisingly funny”Death at a Funeral”) on the plane, but the princess didn’t sleep much, even in first class. I think there was a pea under her seat cushion. We’re now on our way over to San Juan island to hopefully spend the day looking out over the water and spotting bald eagles and killer whales. I told Lillis she can pet one. Since only two people much read this, I’ll say “hi, Jill. Hi, Lillis. ”
We’re SO glad to be out of the office and off on “adventure.”

here are some pics from a couple of tuscaloosa trips we took in the last few weeks. we went over once just to ski and once to ski AND attend my cousin’s wedding. it’s worth mentioning that although he had never heard the term to “outpunt one’s coverage” he most certainly has. it’s rumored that i did as well.
here are a few of lillis ripping through the water on the slalom ski. not pictured is her traditional pose of putting her foot through the handle and then flexing her muscles (although she did do that, probably trying to impress her boyfriend – jason’s eldest, michael).
here is lillis’ aforementioned boyfriend, michael
each year i work on something new with the wakeboard. this year i’m working on actually pushing off the wake to get more height. it seems somewhat counterintuitive that i can get higher by shoving my board into the water, but there’s some sort of physical principal at work that makes that the way to go. just a note, it doesn’t work if you’re just standing still, so there’s that. next trip, i’m gonna work on going goofy footed so i can prepare for some 180’s (and b/c i want to be able to do the same come snowboard season).
lil agreed to be photographed with me. i haven’t gotten to wear my linen suit in a while. i enjoy wearing it, especially since i got the zipper repaired.
