weirdest meal so far • 08.04.08

unless the meat in the rice i had for lunch was cat (and that is entirely possible – no i’m not kidding and cat tongue WAS on the menu) then the weirdest thing i’ve eaten so far was this elephant fish. what you do is you take a chunk (meat, skin, and yes, scales) wrap it in lettuce, then rice paper, then dip it (lightly as i would learn). the meat was very good, the experience; very unsettling. oh, btw, later that night (sunday) i got lost for 45 minutes when my hotel turned off their sign and i couldn’t find “home” until a little past 11. i have made a mental note to anticipate that in the future

mmmmm breakfast • 08.03.08

i bought a banana wrapped in rice and banana leaves that was grilled by a woman on the street. i asked where cafe was, and she sent me to a watch store. they went and got me a cafe (pictured here with my vietnamese hot pocket). oh and that reminds me, later i need to post the fish-like monster i ate whole yesterday!

another floating market pic • 08.03.08

here is one of a family getting some fruit ready to sell. they lived on this two room boat. the boat next door (maybe it was a duplex?) had two chickens and a giant fish in an aquarium in it. we crossed from there on a bamboo bridge to an island where a woman let us sample some fruit and play with her basenji puppy.

one other interesting side note. everybody knows the word “hello!” (usually said con gusto). not many other english words, but you’ll hear hello a heck of a lot more than u ever would in america.

also, it (as are many non-american cultures) is a “saving face” culture which can make getting questions answered very difficult bc anything not known or not understood is just a “yes”. example “internet? wifi?” “aaah, yes.” but there is no wifi to be found. i probably prefer the american custom to just shrug our shoulders when we don’t know something (or just don’t care to answer the question : )
