VDay Bash in B’ham02.09.08

for anyone who’s not aware, i am no longer coaching a 13 year old volleyball team. nope, i’ve moved up to 17’s.

soooo, i spent the weekend in bham for a volleyball tournament. the team was riding high off our victory in chattanooga (against 18’s teams no less) and looking forward to this tournament. it started off with gena and i stuck in a traffic jam on the way over at like 7:30 in the morning. i got out to investigate and had gotten about a mile down the road when the traffic started to loosen up. this led to me sprinting back down the side of the highway towards gena’s car. after waking up two different truckers along the way, i got back to gena right about the time she was picking up speed. we had a pretty good first day of the tournament and then went to the zoo. these photos and videos are from that zoo trip.

jen and angela taunt some type of exotic fowl before we even get started.

here a druskat has sprouted from jordan’s hair.

and here our girls are seen reading the “don’t feed the giraffes” sign.

um, ok, maybe they weren’t reading the sign, after all.

they don’t tend to follow rules as well as these two who were very careful not to cross the barrier.

and here’s one of our players (ali) with an (ali)gator. i know it’s a terrible joke, but that’s all i got.

and here is the requisite team photo

unfortunately the 2nd day did not go as well and we were put out in the first round of the tournament. : ( hopefully we’ll turn it around in the 2nd half of our season!

Stephen’s Bachelor Party In New Orleans01.27.08

so, we headed down to Nawlins for Stephen’s bachelor party. stephen as you may or may not know is my small group member and roomate (up until his wedding). We decided to have the bachelor party in New Orleans b/c it is the only place that i know of where you can see a girl play the spoons on a washboard.

ok, that wasn’t the actual reason. i think it was just more of a compromise location. not as evil as vegas, not as expensive as key west, not as foreign as costa rica. it’s a great city though, and i hadn’t been in forever. i have no pictures of the first night b/c i actually fell asleep in my room and no one called to wake me up. good times!

so, instead, i got up the next morning and wandered around the city taking pictures while everyone else slept. i went to cafe dumond (spelling?) and got some beignets and coffee and just “took a look” at the city. i hadn’t been there in at least 5 years, and just love the way it feels. this was about the only time i had to just wander around with no agenda and enjoy that new orleans attitude. at this point, i made a mental note to come back for jazzfest in the not too distant future.

i offered stephen good money touse this toilet….he refused.

it was mardis gras, but it was the lamest mardis gras i have ever seen. this is highly representative of the crowd that was out for most parades, and this was a saturday late afternoon. hopefully, that was just b/c it was cold, drizzly weather for a particularly early mardis gras season this year.

on the second night we actually ate at the house of blues and then saw jonny lang perform. he was actually really terrific and is a pretty darned impressive musician.

i wandered around a litlte more the next morning and then got on the plane to head back home.

i feel like i should have an amusing anectdote or something, but i don’t. i gambled for about 15 minutes (either i suck at blackjack or that dealer was very good) and we watched some college basketball. next time i’ll get some cawfish crepes, and a debris sandwhich at mothers!! until then….

Some Random Atlanta Pictures01.26.08

so, i just thought i’d post some random atlanta pics. lillis and i had a big day saturday before last in what surely qualified as “quality time” and time very well spent, and then headed over to the park to relax and just walk around for a bit. as luck would have it, it was one of the most spectacular sunsets in recent memory. so, we snapped a few photos (one of which is below).

not too long after we entered the park, the coloration was gone, and i snapped this picture of “my home” just before it got dark.

later that week it snowed, and i headed back over to the park (before going to a game to watch our hawks put the smack down on the nuggets) in freezing temperatures to capture the snowfall

on a thoroughly unrelated note, click here to see how many 5 year olds you can put the smack down on. apparently i could take out approximately 25 of them. i AM willing to use a 5 year old as a weapon, but not sure if i’m willing to resort to eye gouging.
