premium butter milk cream bun08.05.08

that’s what you get for 60 cents on the jet star air flight. also you get to sit next to a guy who may or may not have tb. i literally lept over him as soon as the fasten seatbelt light went off. the flight was really turbulent, causing the aussie next to me to chunda. next stop for me? OD on vitamin c and zinc, then hit china beach!

btw, worth noting that i encountered almost no one who could speak any more english than “hello!” my entire time in the mekong region. also, for some reason people seem to think it’s lucky to touch chuck and they want to introduce us to their babies. that’s all for now.

some pics from the last few days08.04.08

today we’re off to another city. just c. and i, as the ladies are going to stay here for a few more days. we walked around the town for a while last night (in a nice little drizzle) and ate at a fabulous place that only served one dish. it was steak (in a cast iron cow) with a piece of hot dog, a fried egg, some potato chips and a reddish sauce on it. it was like $1.80. it was very good and i’m not even kidding. later c. had his ears cleaned by a guy using what appeared to be a radio antenna. good times. this morning i was awakened at like 5:30 by the public loudspeakers calling everyone out to what i will call “vietnarobics”. many many people go to central areas and walk around or shake their hands out. it looks like a big de-stress session. also, from what i understand, the people talking on the loudspeakers (aside from playing music) are encouraging people to use good hygiene and to only have two kids.

anyway, before we take off, i thought i’d share a few pics…..

um, ok, upload problems, maybe the pics will be there later.

weirdest meal so far08.04.08

unless the meat in the rice i had for lunch was cat (and that is entirely possible – no i’m not kidding and cat tongue WAS on the menu) then the weirdest thing i’ve eaten so far was this elephant fish. what you do is you take a chunk (meat, skin, and yes, scales) wrap it in lettuce, then rice paper, then dip it (lightly as i would learn). the meat was very good, the experience; very unsettling. oh, btw, later that night (sunday) i got lost for 45 minutes when my hotel turned off their sign and i couldn’t find “home” until a little past 11. i have made a mental note to anticipate that in the future
